Intro
CarMax hires at scale across a wide range of roles, from retail and logistics to corporate and tech. That breadth introduces complexity quickly, both in how roles are organized and how candidates encounter them.
The design needed to preserve clarity and predictability while absorbing organizational intricacy.
Design Challenge
Maintaining clarity and speed in a hiring experience built for a complex, high-volume organization.
Role-Focused Entry Points
Clear entry points helped candidates recognize where they belonged quickly, reducing guesswork and unnecessary navigation.
By aligning the interface with real search behavior, the design shortened the path from interest to application while keeping the experience straightforward and predictable.
Brand Continuity
The hiring experience was designed as a continuation of CarMax’s consumer-facing product. Familiar visual language and interaction patterns established trust immediately, without introducing a separate mental model.
Candidates moved from browsing to applying without feeling like they had entered a different system, reinforcing credibility and reducing uncertainty at the moment of commitment.
Mobile Decision-Making
Layouts and hierarchy were designed to support quick understanding and fast decisions, especially in mobile contexts where attention is limited and intent is high.
Information surfaced in the order candidates needed it, allowing them to scan, orient, and act without unnecessary pauses.
Outcome
The result was a hiring surface that felt grounded, familiar, and easy to engage with, even as the organization behind it operated at scale.
Impact:

- Clearer paths from exploration to application

- Candidate confidence at moments of decision

- A hiring experience that scaled without surfacing internal complexity
